: a person experienced in the art or science of government;especially : one actively engaged in conducting the business of a government
So many people hate politicians, the word, the concept, the people who are them; but why? When did the term become so dirty that it can be used as a insult?
"Don't be such a politician, or don't be so political," and my favorite, "All politicians are evil."
I am too frustrated right now to deviate from getting to the point. The right wing conservative agenda and media need to stop blaming politicians for the problems in America, while at the same time the liberals and democrats need to stop following suit.
I am now going to name some politicians:
George Washington
Thomas Jefferson
John Adams
Ben Franklin
John Hancock
Ulysses S Grant
Abraham Lincoln
Woodrow Wilson
F D R
Winston Churchill
Margaret Thatcher
Alexander Hamilton
John F Kennedy
"All politicians are evil." This idea and notion doesn't make sense. Let me expand this a bit.
"All Dr.'s should be sued for their incompetence."
"All public teachers should be fired."
"All Fireman Leach off of tax payer's money."
I hope that perhaps that this list may give some perspective. There have been many great politicians in the history of America and beyond. In a representative system of government it is the right, the privilege, and the duty of the citizens to choose who shall be their representative. Even an individual who may chose not to cast a vote will affect the system.
I respect a person who is willing to devote their work to that of the people. To do the best they can for the people they represent. There are few deeds nobler than than of a person who devotes their life, or even just a small portion of their life to the ideal of Democracy. I am proud of the women and men that answer the call of Democracy.
America should be proud of the word politician. The simple word conjures notions of hope, change, leaders, and better futures. The word politician is not dirty and to be thrown about lightly, but a title granted to those that carry on the legacy of America.
To all the true politicians out there, hold your heads high and take back your title. Do not let our Founding Fathers, our great Presidents, and courageous leaders to be so easily insulted and belittled. If our country is to grow stronger it will not be because just the American people rose to the challenge, but also because our American Politicians rose to the challenge as well.
So the next time you hear, think, or read about dirty, corrupt, un-American politicians STOP! Those people are not politicians. They are not deserving of a title that so many a great person has held.
I want another George Washington. I want another Jefferson. I want another great politician to rise to the calling, like only a real, American, politician can do.
